“No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.”
~Philippians 3.13-14, New Living Translation
The Daily Race is a personal blog that captures the spiritual pilgrimage of the Reverend Starlette McNeill who seeks to put race behind her and hopes to inspire others to join her on this marathon of sorts. It is an expression of Christ’s ministry of reconciliation, aimed at healing the personal, cultural and spiritual wounds of race while delivering a message of freedom, trusting that “whom the Son sets free is free indeed” (John 8.36). Race has come in first place in the identity formation of countless persons, rendering them “second class” citizens all over the world. And race has had a history of great trainers and countless supporters– encouraged by the pseudo- scientific findings of phrenology, physiognomy and anthropology, Enlightenment’s reason and the misappropriation of Holy Scripture for the purposes of economic exploitation and domination. Moving forward and moving ahead of race is a daily commitment that requires taking intentional, faith- filled steps away from the social construct of race and its progeny and toward the undivided self. The Daily Race seeks to create a sacred space for the questions that arise in the practice of faith due to the social reality of race, its seemingly familial presence and cultural acceptance; to share opportunities, supports and services that strengthen the commitment to live a race-less life; and to run alongside those who seek to understand their faith and to accept its identity without the attributes of race. On your mark… Get set…
